Near-death Experience
In 1982, Ken Vegotsky booked a trip to Nassau with his wife to steal some time away from the stress of his business as a partner in Roadrunner Jeans Manufacturing. He wanted to experience a thrill, one that would take him high over the ocean in pursuit of his childhood memory of Peter Pan.
Little did the former NDG resident know that the parasailing ride he was about to take would change his destiny forever. A freak accident occured. He came crashing into the ocean at a tremendous speed. He suffered a heart attack. His left arm was paralyzed. Nerve damage on the upper spinal column, a paralysed diaphram. a collapsed lung and excruciating pain were the souvenirs of that unforgettable holiday. Over the next five years, Vegotsky, now on government lifetime disability, underwent four major surgeries. On the advice of a doctor, he went on megadoses of anti-depressants. He was also on painkillers that proved to be more harmful than helpful. "I began to realize all the drugs were masking the symptoms; they were not helping my body to use its own wisdom to heal itself. I turned to the tools in nature," revealed Vegotsky who helped found the North American Chronic Pain Association. Vegotsky's compelling journey towards health involved going off disability, self-empowerment and an overdue adios to some eager drug-dispensing doctors. It culminated in an inspiring book titled The Ultimate Power. In 1995, Vegotsky met two health wizards--Elvis Ali, Canada's first naturopath and Dr George Grant, a biochemist listed in the International Who's Who of Professionals. They were amazed at the story they heard from Vegotsky, who was speaking at health shows in Toronto. By this time, Vegotsky's 10 years of research into the natural remedies he was taking, fueled by a belief that mind, body and soul are all interconnected, proved to be marvellous antidotes for his chronic pain, mood swings and high blood pressure. A health guru of sorts, Vegotsky was gaining attention from North American health experts, including a group of eight specialists, four of whom were reputable doctors. Collectively, their impressive credentials united key areas of wellness: homeopathy, pharmacology, rehabilitation, acupunture, nutrition, vitamins, minerals and additional forms of natural medicinal sources. "The book, Natural Remedies and Supplements is an all-in-one guide," explained 48-year-old Vegotsky. "The modern allopathic medical approach uses diagnostic tools, prescription drugs and surgery. It's tops when a medical crisis strikes, such as a heart attack or injury. But as for prevention and long-term quality of life, this system pays little attention to three key factors vital to maintaining wellness," he emphasized. Believing that optimal well-being is attained through balancing an integrated trio of mind, body and soul, the co-writers of the book recommend a series of brilliantly researched and easy-to-follow natural remedies that fall into various categories: vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, fats, herbs, aromatherapy, flower and homeopathic remedies, supplements, phytochemicals and nutraceuticals such as bee pollen, an assortment of juices and extracts, to mention only 0.1 percent of the lengthy fascinating list. The book is a terrific guide. It explains what our body needs in order to stay well and prevent needless premature aging. Whatever ails you, the index will easily direct you to pertinent pages where you'll discover a variety of remedies. There's a glossary of terms at the back of the guide outlining mainstream and alternative medicine as well. In chaper 17, you'll discover the top 38 flower remedies and what they cure. Likewise, on pages 178 and 179, health problems along with appropriate healing herbs are listed and described. Natural treatments for diabetes and menopause are just some of the topics covered in this book. A veritable naturopathic bible, the book compares medical approaches to various diseases. Nineteen chapters present concise but comprehensive data and explanations about the digestive system, enzymes, carbohydrates, fats. oils and fiber. There are a trillion books out there that dryly list natural user-friendly cures and health aids, but quite frankly, I found this book to read like a story. It's a story about our body and mind, and the magic they bring, if only we would educate, love and discipline ourselves. Ken Vegotsky's own story proves that if we ingest the right stuff every day, listen to our hearts and with our hearts, strive for a personal dream that's within reasonable reach, and let go of past anger, all will be well. |
