Tea Tree Oil Nature's Antiseptic & Fungicidal Agent

The list of proven applications using pure tea tree oil is extensive and growing in the industrial, commercial and consumer markets.
--- The Tea Tree Oil Bible

Tea tree oil has withstood the test of time and science. They have proven that the Melaleuca alternifolia tree indigenous to the north-east coastal region of New South Wales offers a natural, inexpensive, alternative to drugs currently used for skin disorders. A clinical trial of tea tree oil was undertaken for the treatment of various dermatological disorders in 50 out-patients in San Juan Capistrano, California.

At the end of the six month study all patients who completed treatment were either cured, or showed remarkable improvement in their presenting condition, according to a review in the Australian Journal of Pharmacy, Vol. 72 Sept. 1991. It was confirmed that tea tree oil is a safe natural effective topical drug for the treatment of monilial and other fungal dermatoses and superficial skin infections, with minimal or no side effects.

For Skin Problems It's Tea Tree Oil

Patients with various skin disorders were selected at random for the study. The conditions treated were mild facial and back acne; mouth and throat thrush; skin rashes: non-specific dermatitis, eczema, infected pustules; oral canker sores; Herpes simplex of the face and lips; fingernail and toenail fungus. Fifty patients were supplied tea tree oil for a period of one to four weeks, depending on the severity of the condition being treated.

After one day, one patient dropped out of the study, because of mild skin sensitivity to the 100% oil. This was the only side effect reported. Patients with infections had the diagnosis confirmed by culture swabs. For success to be determined, a negative culture had to be demonstrated after treatment.

The results of using tea tree oil for these problems were very favorable. All patients, with the exception of one, were cured of their condition, as proven by negative post-treatment cultures. The patient with eczema was resistant to the treatment but said that the pruitus had decreased. All other patients were either cured or showed remarkable improvement in the presenting condition.

Tea Tree Oil Withstands The Test Of Time

The scientific results should not be surprising. The Aborigines who lived in north-eastern New South Wales were aware of the qualities of the tea tree that proliferated in the local swampy areas. They treated their cuts and wounds by crushing the leaves of the tea tree and sprinkling them liberally over the injury and then covering it with a warm mud pack.

A 1930 article in the Medical Journal of Australia stated that "the results obtained in a variety of conditions when tea tree oil was first tried were most encouraging, a striking feature being that it dissolved pus and left the surface of infected wounds clean, so that its germicidal action became more effective without any apparent damage to the tissue."

The article also noted that the oil was a potent gargle to clear up sore throats in the early stages and, when added to hand soap, "its action on typhoid bacilli was found to be more than 80 times as rapid as other disinfectant soaps."

During the 1930s, the oil of the tea tree became a scientifically recognized treatment used around the world by dentists for pyorrhea, gingivitis, nerve-capping and hemorrhages. Doctors also prescribed tea tree oil for gynecological conditions, throat infections, and a variety of skin fungi and pus-filled infections.

Today tea tree oil is available at your health food store in everything from mouthwash, toothpaste, shampoo to throat lozenges. Look for products that meet the Australian standard, which requires that the cineole be less than 15% and terpinen-r-ol be more than 30%.
